Ascent Trip ReportDonner Peak, Mount Judah, and Donner Tunnel Trail
Was getting my backpack fixed by the awesome technical cleaners company in Truckee. Decided to peakbag while we waited.
Parked at Old Donner Pass, walked downhill to the dank tunnels not far below. The wind picked up a lot of dust in the tunnels and we could hear mice everywhere. The tunnel had a bad smell. We returned back to the car then went up to peakbag.
Took the PCT South from the old donner pass. After a mile we took a left on the Mount Judah Loop Trail. Encountered several hundred school children going the opposite direction of us (which was not fun for anyone else on the trail). Took the obvious use trail towards Donner peak (not the first viewpoint, the second major left). You can mostly just go uphill anywhere that doesn't end in bushes. The summit register is on the lower "tourist summit" to the southeast. The real summit is the Western more one. There is a way up there that is not too hard if you go around clockwise then climb up the West side. It's probably a class 2 but there are a couple spots that could really mess you up if you slipped. The real summit has a geological survey marker and a small metal memorial for someones mom/grandma. Views here are amazing. We went back down towards the Judah Loop Trail the same way we came up. Here we found an Emigrant Trail highpoint marker that we had missed on the way up.
We continued up the trail along the ridge. Both summit areas were very windy. The summit is lined with ski area boundary signs. The summit itself has great views of Freel/Jobs/Sister and everything else 360 degrees around. The trail continued straight over the mountain summit. Took us back down to the PCT for a loop back to the car.
