Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful hike in a glorious place. My daughter and I celebrated our first California 14er on September 4.

I had a hankering for a non-Colorado 14er and applied for a permit in the lottery back in the spring. Rachel was planning to pursue a PhD in Davis and this would be a great chance to be in the vicinity of Whitney. I didn't get the permit and, after checking weekly, gave up on the idea of bagging it on this trip. Still, we decided to make the trip from Colorado an adventure, stopping in Vegas to play craps, going through Death Valley and visiting Rachel's cousin in Yosemite. We were planning on climbing Boundary Peak instead of Whitney.

On a whim, I checked recreation.gov on Saturday, the day before we were leaving. Two permits were available! Bingo; plans changed.

Going in, I was confused about the length of the trail. Pulling several tracks from this site, it appeared that the RT was between 18 and 20 miles. When we picked up our permits, the rangers told us the RT distance is 22 miles. There is also a sign just after the junction of the Mountaineers route that shows distance to the summit of 1.9 miles and the distance to the Portal of 8.7 miles. My GPS track measured 19.5 miles and we stayed on the trail both up and down. It is a long hike; just how long seems to be the question.

Regardless of length, the trail is very well constructed. I've climbed all of Colorado's 14ers and I think the Whitney trail ranks as the most consistent in grade of any that I've been on - never steep and only occasionally flat. With only a bit of rock-hopping along the ridge, its a very easy hike from a technical standpoint. However, length and vertical gain make it a challenge for a day hike.

We really enjoyed the hike and the scenery. Looking forward to coming back and hiking/climbing some more CA 14ers.
