Ascent Trip Report

For this day 8 of our 9 day hiking trip to eastern Quebec, we took in 7 small hills northeast of Thetford Mines all as per this one only TR.

00.0km … A-73, exit 81, north of Saint Joseph de Beauce we zeroed our odo and traveled westbound on Hwy #112 towards Thetford Mines.
07.6km … stayed straight on Rang du Bas St Antoine, as #112 makes a left bend.
07.8km … T-JCT turned right onto Rang du Bas St Antoine, road will jog left and right (northwest)
10.9km … left on Rang Ste Alexandre (southwest)
14.5km … pass Rang Ste Anne on right, leads northwest to MONT DU COSMOS (per below). Continued on Ste Alexandre (southwest).
16.7km … arrive at T-JCT in Saint Severin, beautiful church with tall steeple straight ahead. This is the start of the driving instructions to St Andre, Chaudron and Marguarite and Handkerchief. (all as per below)

MONT DU COSMOS … road walk, 600 meters RT.
From Rang Ste Alexandre (14.5km Marker above) we drove northwest on Rang Ste Anne for 6km to the crest, with the gated entrance to Mont du Cosmos on the right (46.37461,71.08817). Limited open hours during the summer.
This University of Laval's Observatory is home to one of the more important telescopes in Quebec, reservations required. I walked the 200 meter road northeast to the top. A network of trails lead to a few lookouts.

LE CHAUDRON and MONT SAINT ANDRE … road walk, a total of 2.9km RT walk for both.
0.0km … at the church in Saint Severin we zeroed our odo, and picked up Rue de l'Eglise (becomes 1er Rang) northwestbound
2.8km ... turned right onto Rang St Charles (heads northeast then northwest)
4.0km … stayed left (straight) at JCT on Rang St Andre
4.5km … gated grass road on the left #122. Parked here for MONT SAINT ANDRE ( a road walk to the southwest of 2.4 km RT). I walked the grass road southwest 200 meters to a wind turbine and the start of the windfarm road, which took me another 1km to the crest of the road (straight ahead are 2 more turbines). The HP (46.35028,-71.08656) is to the left at 15 meters inside the woods at a large moss covered erratic rock. I back tracked to the TH.
4.9km … a track is to the left, I parked here for LE CHAUDRON - the summit (46.35688,-71.08362) is 250 meters to the southwest. An ATV track or a gated overgrown road will easily take you there. An old rotting trailer sits to one side of a small grassed clearing.
Both are not interesting destinations, I rate them "for Peakbaggers only".

From Saint Severin we picked up Chemin Sainte Marguarite and found our way west to the entrance to Domaine du Radar - the entry fee is now 6.50$ per person. See its TR for the details of this second visit.

MONT HANDKERCHIEF … road walk wb … 2.2km, 32 minutes RT.
The access road, Rang Handkerchief, is right across the road from Mont Sainte Marguerite's "Domaine du Radar". We followed it southwest for 2.5km to a fork and parked (46.31382,-71.18108), the road continues left. Right is a gated windfarm road which we hiked westerly 1.1km to its dead-end with Turbine #T07, the HP is just to its north. A few hundred meters before on the right is Turbine #T06.
Another lousy destination rated "for PBers only".

MONTAGNE DE TROIS … road walk nwb .. 1.4 km, 20 minute RT.
From JCT Hwy #112/269 just east of Thetford Mines we went north on #269 for 2.9km to Pont Briand and a right (northeast) on Rue de l'Eglise, 1.2km turned right (east) onto Chemin des Tours, .8km east parked at roped-off gravel road on the left.
I hiked/climbed the gravel road (gate at 150 meters) northwest .7km to the top, a fenced-in Communication Tower complex. Nice views on-route of the valley to the south.

Tomorrow we will visit Mont Thetford before driving home.
