Ascent Trip ReportDecatur county has three 700 foot contours, 2 in the southern part of the county and 1 in the north which is about 20 minutes off I-40.
Ponderosa Point (northern point)
The northern point is in the Ponderosa Point community on a hill over looking Kentucky Lake. Previous reports were a little confusing, the easiest way to the high point is:
Take exit 129 off I-40 headed south.
Turn left at McIllwain Rd 1.9 mi
Turn right at Old State Hwy 69 1.5 mi
There is an odd intersection here but you will get off Hwy 69 and continue heading ESE on Hog Creek Rd
Stay on Hog Creek Rd for about 3.9 mi
Hog Creek is also called Wren Rd
There will be a sharp bend in the road a large sign for Ponderosa Point on your right. Turn right here and go up hill to enter the neighborhood.
Stay on Skyline Dr for about a mile until it intersects Ridgeway Dr and Pine Ridge Ln
There is a small view of the lake through the trees but not much else of note.
The two southern points are off Smith Gravel Pit Road in what appears to be a wild life refugee or hunting area. There were posted areas and I passed hunters but there was also a pull off for a trail system. The hill where these contours was heavily wooded and afforded no view of the surrounding but the drive along Smith Gravel Rd had a few views.
Smith Gravel Road lives up to its name; I took it from TN Highway 114 when approaching from the west but the northern approach along Mt Carmel Rd is a paved road.
