Ascent Trip ReportScared off by testimonials of the normal road's poor quality, I ventured up from the west via the Stobie Ranch Road. This road certainly was pretty smooth but left me far from my objective on the wrong side of a massive burn area. From about 5600' on the southwest ridge of Cook Mountain, the trail as indicated on the topo is miraculously intact. The tread, that is. The corridor is plagued with at least 2,000 blowdowns, which made for a hip-wrenchingly slow journey through this devastated landscape. It took me over three hours of hustling to reach Thompson's summit by this ~7 mile route.
My experience, though trying, wasn't bad at all. This is remote country, as demonstrated by the many black bears, coyotes, and muley bucks I saw both on the drive of the Thompson River Road and the hike. Also this climb concluded my ascents of the prominence peaks in far northwestern Montana. This is a unique area that I managed to experience much of during my journey. I'm very grateful to have been able to see and do so much here, with more to come!
