Ascent Trip ReportGravel roads in the Dolly Sods Wilderness are generally well-kept and well-signed, though there is no sign for Bell Knob--just a steel gate that says foot traffic is welcome. The old road to the tower is overgrown but otherwise easy. The tower is decrepit--part of the platform has collapsed. The steps looked OK but I decided not to load-test them, since low clouds prevented any views anyway.
GIS maps indicates Bell Knob has a spot elevation of 4,144, compared to 4,141 for the remote hilltop in the Dolly Sods Wilderness. I did not attempt that second point during this trip, though I intend to someday, and I think anyone intent on completing the West Virginia COHPs would want to go there.
Set your car GPS to Dolly Sods, Dry Fork WV, 26260. There are two roads up to the wilderness from Jordan Run Road. Bell Knob is accessed from Forest Road 75 on the east side of the wilderness. The mountain is part of the Alleghany Front and the Eastern Continental Divide.
