Ascent Trip ReportNeeded to get dog out for some exercise and rain on the way. No time for a big hike so parked at the West Paved parking area near "Gilligan's Island" - that is the name the park gives to this interesting rock formation in the middle of the grassy field. I had interred this last year under the name Elephant Park Twin Knobs not knowing the park came up with their own name for it that now shows up on the official park route map.
I was not sure if my 85 pound Wiemaraner could climb the rock but he was all excited to go with me, and to be out of the house, and I found him easily jumping rock to rock so we scrambled together the standard route up from the west, and he climbed it with ease. Dog's low mass and claws give them quite an advantage running up slabs and jumping small gaps. What I did not expect was the down part. I found a steep slab walk down on the (east) backside that I thought would be easier for him so I unclipped him from the leash and hiked own it with my boots smearing easily. When I looked back his eyes were wide open and hyper-attentive and was crouched low to the rock not looking comfortable with down-climb on a slab that was easy for me. So I told him to wait and ran back up the slab and we reversed our route through the west slab and boulders and he was back to excitedly jumping through the formation with an ease that I wish I could move. Vertical scramble walls are of course, an obvious place where canine anatomy prevents them from following; but a steep slab, I would have thought should have been easy for him. Lesson learned. It was wonderful having him accompany me on a short small scramble and see his enthusiasm. |
