Ascent Trip Report

The peak was enveloped in cloud on the day but conditions were calm and I decided to carry on.

Starting from the electric train stop at Tatranske Zruby 995m, stopping for coffee at the Sliezsky Dom hotel at Velicke Pleso (Velicke Lake 1666m), heading up to the col at Polsky Hreben 2200m, up to the summit at Vysoka 2428m, overall an ascent of 1433m. The track is clear with much of it paved and good signposting / waymarks en route.

Paving underfoot can be challenging as it's made from fairly large and very often rounded granitic stones and boulders: need to keep your eyes on the footfall! Not having been on steep slopes for some time, and my first climb of the trip, I found it a challenging to climb and descend in 1 day, about 8 hours including stops for coffee, lunch and flower pictures, but very worthwhile. Lots of wildflowers out but the stunning blue flowered Willow Gentian (Gentiana asclepiadea) stole the show.

The electric train terminus is in the city of Poprad, excellent maps are available from the Tourist Office in Poprad Train Station (Vysoke Tatry 701 1:25000) and the very tourist town of Stary Smokovec.

On a second ascent a week later there was a dusting on the peak of the first snow of the autumn, the sky was blue, the air calm and warm, and the views excellent.
