Ascent Trip Report10 hour approach. We car camped at the Monument Lake TH to get an early start and beat the heat (started up at 6:30). It was Overcast with freezing level around 10 or 11K. Was not too hot and the clouds kept the sun's rays from hitting directly. We still filled up with 4 liters of water at Eureka creek and drank them all (1 liter total for Gypsy). We lost the trail within 10 minutes of crossing the creek and pulled up Sean Albert's GPS track to get on the trail. Higher up we referred to the track to be sure we were still good, but there are plenty of cairns and if you hit a log/bush, you just need to work around the obstacle to refind the trail.
Above 5800' the trail is a lot better. Yes, there are many logs to step over, but most of them you can just step over (12-24" diameter). From 6200' to when the switchbacks finally start up to Pistol Pass, the trail is actually super clear and nice - hard to believe it has not been maintained for 30 years (or so I read somewhere).
We did not see a turnoff to the Lake of the Woods by-trail at 6600'. After dropping 100' more, we lost faith and went cross country. We used Sean's GPS track to be sure we were headed the right way. As it turns out, despite what we read in route-prep, the by-trail is at more like 6400' and well marked with a cairn and a sign on the tree next to the turnoff ("Lake of the Woods").
On summit day it took us 6 hours from camp to summit of Monument, 5 hours from Monument to Lake, and 1.75 hours to descend the E ridge. Total time for the day was 14 hours (we spent time on each summit). We got to camp at 7:30 pm - plenty of time to cook dinner and crash.
We slept in on Tuesday and left camp at 8:40 am. It took 7.5 hours to get to the TH.
