Ascent Trip ReportThis was really enjoyable - one of my best days in the mountains. One other small group at the trailhead, but after a quick chat, headed toward McCully and they headed in toward Bonny Lakes. I was by myself from the trail junction until I returned to the truck. The trail disappears a couple of times in meadows, but it is always pretty obvious where you want to head. I suspect that one could skip Wing Ridge by aiming from the meadows in Big Sheep Basin to the notch to the east of the Wing Ridge high point, and then angle back toward the Wing-East McCully saddle, but also suspect that it would be a wash effort-wise, at best. Had I not got such a late start, I might have explored that option on the return, but I stuck with the known route and crossed Wing Ridge summit a second time. 3 1/2 mls to the McCully Basin Pass, a little under 5 mls total from trailhead to summit of East McCully via Wing Ridge. Some elk were whistling and chatting at each other down near the head of Little Sheep Creek and when the breeze shifted, could hear them clearly. Watched them through binoculars for a while, then headed on my way. Bluebirds, a fox, and some other critters along the way. A perfect day. |
