This was done at a relaxed pace. We were going to do Montgomery Peak too, but did not for a number of reasons, including time and weather. Which was a good choice considering a thunderstorm rolled in right as we got back to the car.
This hike is very straightforward. You basically follow a dirt road for a bit (which you can skip if you drive a little further), and then you follow a well-"maintained" trail all the way to Trail Canyon Saddle. Here the trail takes a more use trail-like character and becomes confusing as you reach the talus piles above 12,000 ft. There are many ways to get to the top from here, but I think the most prudent way would be to stay low and sidehill along the right side of the high ridge until you are at a saddle almost right below the summit. From here, walk up to the little bump that is the summit area. Here you will get your first views of Montgomery Peak.
Descend the way you came.
