Ascent Trip Report

The ninth day of the Sierra Challenge was meant to be a short day sandwiched between long days at Onion Valley and Horseshoe Meadow. Candlelight is not a peak that I would have chosen on my own, but I was intrigued by its relative obscurity, and I was anxious to hike with the group again rather than bag SPS peaks alone. We left from Whitney Portal at 6:00am, taking the old trail shortcut behind the visitors center to Lone Pine Lake. From here, we started up the class 3 slabs and talus from the south side of the lake. Until this point I was with the lead group, but I quickly fell behind with my cautiousness on the terrain. I slowly but surely scrambled to the top of the ridge, at which point the granite became incredibly slabby. I found it easiest to steadily walk up the slabs and take breaks at the landings. We soon reached the point marked on the USGS maps, but it became apparent that this was not the true summit; the lead group was on a higher point further down the ridge. We started downclimbing the local high point and reached a chimney that Sean reported to be class 4-5. Tom downclimbed the chimney, but I found a class 3 descent to the side. I scrambled back up to the next local high point and walked across the ridge to the peak, arriving around 9:25am. We signed the newly-placed summit register, and soon after, most of the group reached the summit. I spent an hour and a half at the summit, by far the longest I've ever spent at the top of a mountain. Eventually, the thought of food and sleep became overwhelming, and I started down the sand slope to the Meysan Lakes trail with AJ, thankful that I wouldn't need to downclimb the slabs. We reached the Meysan Lakes Trailhead around 1:55pm, and AJ gave me a ride back to the Mount Whitney Trailhead to get my car. We had an early group dinner at the Pizza Factory in Lone Pine.
