Ascent Trip ReportUgh. This was a rough hike. I picked a terrible, hot, humid day to do this hike. Don't do that.
We started at 8:30am from Clay Meadows and made it to the split in the trail (1.78mi) in 1hr15min. Take the right trail to get to Fifth Peak. When you get close to the summit of Fifth Peak, there is a split off to the left, well labeled, that leads you to the lean-to on the summit. We made it to this lean-to (2.49mi) in 1hr39min. A good chunk of the elevation gain was to this point.
We went back down and and up and over Fourth and Third Peak and finally made it to French Point (4.47mi) in 3hr23min. Spent maybe 20 minutes up here eating lunch. This is where we saw the rattlesnake (that's required to become a 12ster, right?). He was a BIG ONE.
Got to First Peak (5.67mi) in 4hr17min. Took some pictures and then headed out towards the lake. We got to the split towards Montcalm Point (7.34mi) in 5hr32min.
The walk back follows the lake for the most part. There are ample opportunities to take a break and cool off in the lake if you're prepared. It is not completely flat for this 5miles trek back to Clay Meadows. There are a few spots where there are steep-ish climbs. We were exhausted by this point so we were very slow on the way back.
We made it back to the sign in (12.4mi) in 8hr12min. I ended up running out of water with 3 miles left to this hike (I had a full camelbak bladder and a big bottle of gatorade).
Exhausting hike, beautiful views, so-so bugs, watch out for rattlesnakes (even in trees!!), and bring lots of water.
