Ascent Trip ReportHaving gotten our daughter situated in Sacramento, my wife Melissa and I left for Los Angeles to help our second daughter with her new apartment. I planned a quick hike in Pinnacles, but did not plan on the heat. The drive down was also a bit longer than I expected and we got on the trail around noon. It was very hot--105 degrees. We had plenty of water, but there isn't a lot of shade along the trail and we were quite exposed most of the time. Would have assessed this trail as a 3 but for the heat gave it a 4.
Suffice to say this is a trail best not done during summer, or at least done with much better knowledge of the weather. These are things we from the midwest don't have much power over-- time and situation being most important. For better or worse, we were there and took the opportunity. Got up and down in a bit more time than we had hoped (stopped many times in what shade there was to rest my wife). 5 1/2 hours in that sun was enough for both of us and we were glad to be down with cool water in the car. Didn't get to our VRBO in Venice til 11pm which worried the girls. Sometimes parents are still the ones who worry the others--a little role reversal never hurts.
Took Bear Gulch Trail to the reservoir and then North Chalone Trail from there. You can see the tower from a long way off to guide you along the way. Hot and dusty all the way up and down.
