Ascent Trip Report

I parked at the standard TH on Berryessa/Knoxville Road having arrived at 5:30am. I waited until just before six to begin the hike. There were a couple of hunters starting in across the road as it was the last week of deer season using bows. Immediately after I started I noticed severe burn areas...I mean pulverized ash. It wasn't long before I came across a fallen tree across the trail. Turns out, I had to circumnavigate about 15 fallen trees. As I got up to the trail below the ridge line I noticed some of the trail, especially on the downward trajectory was overcome by mini-landslides. I had to bound across quickly to not slide down. The last part descending to the dry creek and the lowest point of the descent and regain, the burn area about ended. But even the steps constructed by the trail team were burned away. The bottom line is that when the rains come, there will be no more trail under the cliffs. The rest of the climb was routine as you are on the edge of the burn. The burn area did extend across the gravel road as you ascend the final mile or so. Apparently this fire happened a month before. I really couldn't see anything as the Mendocino fire was going strong.
