Ascent Trip ReportThe first day of the 2018 Sierra Challenge promised to be a smoky one due to the unfortunate number of wildfires in the area. The challenge peak was just outside of Bridgeport, but I opted to head further south in an attempt to dodge some of the smoke. I drove to Mammoth the night before via Sonora Pass; 120 closed earlier in the day due to the Ferguson Fire. I drove unnervingly close to the Donnell Fire, which had started only hours earlier. The smoke was thick in Mammoth and in the Owens Valley in the morning, but the skies cleared considerably only minutes after turning onto Rock Creek Road. I got started at the Rock Creek Lake Trailhead at 7:34am and made my way towards Francis Lake. I got wet feet trying to navigate through a swamp just below the lake, which I reached after an hour. I started cross-country up the large boulder field behind the lake and gained the ridge, where I saw a pack of about fifteen Sierra Bighorn Sheep. I continued up the ridge and summited at 10:42am. While there wasn't any smoke on the mountain itself, I was surrounded in nearly every direction, which was a very sobering experience. All things considered, the smoke in the Little Lakes Valley was much better than I was expecting. I spent a half an hour at the summit and was back at the trailhead at 1:37pm.
Stats: 3h8m up, 30m at summit, 2h25m down, 11.3 miles, ~4,360ft gained.
