Ascent Trip ReportEnded up driving up to the summit, not the way I like to check off the actual mountains but the High Pointers accepts it.
Trying to save a whole day of hiking on an already long road trip full of high points I wanted to avoid the standard 19.2-mile hiking route but still wanted to hike and experience the mountain myself (not through a car). I found a route through "All Trails" that utilized the Huckleberry Trail and was 11 miles but they neglected to include on their website that you have to bushwhack to the the trail. My plan was to car camp at the trail head and then hike up in the morning. Not seeing a parking area or signage I kept going until eventually I figured I'll go to the top tonight and hike down the trail tomorrow and do it in reverse - a map at the summit revealed the bushwhack.
After I parked as the summit parking area I walked to the observation tower and then did the half mile Whispering Spruce Trail loop. Looks like it has nice views but everything was fogged in, back in the parking lot you could sed the clouds rolling through and it was quite beautiful. I'll probably repeat that loop tomorrow for sunrise before heading off to "grand cannon" this mountain.
U.S. state high point #24 - Northeast region complete.
