Ascent Trip ReportFrom VA 94, Ivanhoe Road, I got onto Sheffey School Road and at the school I turned onto Piney Mt Road, VA 640. In a mile Piney Mt Road becomes Broadway and the road surface changes from macadam to dirt/gravel. 4 miles from the school on 640, I reached a gated forest road on the left with room for parking as well as another parking area just a few feet further on 640. At the second area there is a sign post with various signs one of which reads Big Survey Wildlife Management Area. I parked near the gate and walked along the forest road for a couple minutes before heading to my right for a few yards and getting on the foot trail that began back at the upper part of the second parking area.
Took this trail a mile or so up to a saddle of sorts between High Rocks and Sand. Trail is not blazed, but at the saddle blue painted blazes appear. I believe they mark a boundary. Arriving at the first blue blaze look to the right for a faint trail that will take you up to Sand Mountain via a narrow ridge.
I stayed on the main trail which bent left and ascended to High Rocks. A stone bench memorial to Sam Slemp is near the rocks. A red blazed trail leads to possible higher ground, but not the views that High Rocks offers.
