Ascent Trip ReportThis was the first place I've stood over 12,000 feet. I drove directly from the Denver airport to Estes Park and up the memorable Trail Ridge Road. With no time to acclimate, I took my time up the paved half-mile walk through the tundra and past the Mushroom Rocks, then scrambled up the highest outcropping to the memorial, an impressive piece of brasswork which points toward other national parks, including my beloved Great Smokies 1,240 miles away. You couldn't actually see the Smokies, of course, but there were incredible views of the Rocky Mountain National Park, including adjacent Sundance Mountain and not-too-distant Longs Peak. The Toll Memorial is named for a founding ranger, not the $25/car entry fee. This is not a ranked peak and is not even listed at ListsofJohn, but if you're in the park, don't overlook it.
