Ascent Trip ReportI wasn't sure that my Camry would make it to the Horse Meadow TH, so I tried to use what Summit Post calls the Trout Creek TH at a gate at the end of Oneidas Street. Turns out that the street was blocked off 3.8 miles short of the TH. On a Sunday there was no construction going on, but I guess the reason for the closure was construction at the closer of two Corral Trail TH's. So I added a 7.6 mile RT road hike (roughly 1300' elevation gain) to what I had been expecting... The road was paved and in good shape all the way to what what the Global Topo map calls the Freel Peak Use Trail (same as Summit Post's Trout Creek trail). There were a few shallow potholes, but any passenger car could have made it - if it weren't closed. Wish I'd brought a bike along! The Freel Peak use trail showed signs of recent use, but no maintenance. In some places, the trail was overgrown by short stretches of grass or thigh-high brush, but finding the trail on the other side was easy. There was also some water a couple of inches deep on the trail this early in the summer. The last bit of the use trail was a good warm up for the Freel summit trail: a fairly steep hill of decomposed granite, like slogging up a sand dune. The summit was clouding up by noon and I heard thunder a little after 1 p.m. Luckily I was long off the summit by then. Bottom line: until the construction is over, bring a bike!
