Ascent Trip ReportRecipe for success: fly from Seattle to Denver late Friday evening, drive to the road near the Elbert TH with Duane, arriving at Matt and Dan’s parking spot at 1:30am. Of note, Dan arrived from Guam less than 24 hours before this, meaning two of the crew were doing this from sea level. Nap for a few hours until the steady stream of cars wakes you up at 4:30ish before your 5am alarm goes off. Fyi, the trailhead parking lot was full by 5:30am as it was a Saturday. Crowded trail, but we needed to do something for the 2018 V-Crew trip, so an ultra state HP would have to do. Original plan was Ice Mtn scramble near Huron but lightning threats left us unwilling to find ourselves above 13k on 3rd-4th class terrain in crappy weather. Elbert would be our day out together! Thankfully there were only 2 locusts on the trail playing music over Bluetooth speakers and we expressed our displeasure at their lack of class when we walked past them. Overall, the trail is straightforward and one cannot get lost. The vast majority of fellow hikers that started at the early hour we started (5:45ish) knew trail manners, were dressed/packed appropriately, and seemed like knowledgeable Colorado hikers. If you don’t mind a crowded trail, this is an easy day hike ultra. It is certainly one of the least impressive Colorado peaks I have done (I have done very few). Well, the crew was happy as we bagged a state HP and ultra and most importantly had a wonderful day together in the mountains where we all belong! Pressure breathing and hydration work: neither Dan or I had any altitude issues coming from sea level. I even inhaled a PB&J on the summit - appetite loss is one of the first signs of AMS, so no issues with that for us!
