Ascent Trip ReportLast year my son and I took the PCT then cut up to 9750 on the ridge between Red Lake and Stevens Peaks. A very nice hike through open country across meadows and snowfields, not as direct to Red Lake Peak, but a good approach if going directly to Stevens.
This time I headed straight for Red Lake Peak from about 50 feet up the trail. I followed a small drainage up the right side of the ridge, which involved some picking through boulders and deadfall, which can be avoided by sticking closer to the ridgeline. In any event, it's a short stretch and the rest is open country. About a third of the way, I picked up a distinct use trail.
Like others, I climbed the middle false summit block. The southern false summit is on the right as the use trail hits the crest, and the PB map has the red dot on the middle summit. Also, the northern true summit isn't visible from this approach angle. It was a short and fairly basic class 3 climb. Proceeding around the middle block on the right, I followed the use trail to the east side of the summit formation. The most straightforward route appeared to be the wide area to the left of a steep chute. Lots of solid handholds. From the top, it's a short traverse north to the top, where a register is lodged in a northside crack.
From Red Lake Peak it's a simple traverse to Stevens. My track goes east of point 9750, but the west side (or over the top) is easier. A fighter jet came up the canyon from the east and roared past me as I walked the ridge. The return track from Stevens meanders a bit, as I wandered over to some incredible fields of wildflowers and then changed my original plan to catch the PCT, to instead cut back to the ridgeline.
