Born 1948 in Olean, N.Y. Lived in Portville N.Y for the first 12 years of my life. During that time I occasoinally packed a lunch and headed into the local hills for the day. My favorite spot was the bears cave located at a rock outcropping on one of the prominent ridges overlooking Portville. This is where my love of wilderness started. When I was 12 my parents moved to Orange County California. Growing up in California my wilderness outings consisted of our yearly vacations which would be camping on a lake or trout stream in the Sierra’s or Cascades as my dad was a fly fisherman. I hiked as much as I could on those vacations and occasionally got into trouble for not returning to camp before dark. After a stint in the Army I purchased a new JC Penney Back Pack for about $25 and backpacked every chance I got. Up until I was in my late 50's you would define me as a father/backpacker/fisherman/hiker, in that order. Then I did a number of hikes with John Strauch and Terry Flood who introduced me to the HPS, DPS, SPS, etc. peak lists. Prior to this I had done the major local peaks, San Jacinto, Taquitz, San Gorgonio, Baldy, Cuyamaca, Stonewall etc. But after meeting John and Terry I became much more focused on peaks. Since then I'm a grandfather/Peakbagger/backpacker. I'm looking forward to doing some peaks & backpacks with my granddaughters. Hope they are into it.
As of September 2013 my favorite peak is a toss up between Mount Goode and Red Slate Mountain. The views from these peaks are truly awesome. I think my favorite San Diego County peak is Dawns Peak (6582) in the Santa Rosa's. Actually a Riverside County peak but the approach is from San Diego County. The rock structure atop the peak is un-believable.
