Ascent Trip Report

We reached the TH by first driving a paved road from the
east side of the range. The pavement stops at a building Google maps as
"Da Giocondo". A good dirt road continues to a picnic area mapped by Google as "Area di Sosta Croce Del Pratomagno". There were several vehicles parked here
on a Wednesday, and people were enjoying picnics, mushroom hunting,
bike riding, hiking, etc. A locked building is found here, possibly
a former refuge, with barbecue pits on one side. An easy walk uphill
leads to the huge metal Cross of Pratomagno, the destination for
most mountain top walkers. Being peak baggers we had to first
check out the contending area mapped 1 meter higher (1592 to 1591)
on the peakbagger "Italia" map. This area is labeled Monte Pianellaccio.
A monument to pioneer aviator Bert Hinkler
is found here, along with a comm tower with a green repeater shack at its base.

My sight level confirmed the mapped information, and I judged
the comm tower to be at the highest point on the gentle plateau.
It is surrounded by a sturdy small rectangular locked fence, but your head is well
higher than any ground inside the fence when standing by the fence.
We then wandered over to the Croce.

The Bert Hinkler memorial is in the foreground. The highest ground is near the green building. The Croce del Pratomagno is further off, to the right of the green building (2018-06-20). Photo by Andy Martin.
