Ascent Trip ReportLeft Tri Cities Friday afternoon for one of my patented one day climbing marathons in Idaho. Arrived in the Lost River Valley after dark, and had to navigate our way to trailhead using the satellite view feature on the peakbagger app which was convenient. Did turn off the highway at the wrong spot so we ended up at the end of the road on the west side of the creek instead of the slightly closer and more used trailhead on the east side of the creek. We followed the trail for a grand total of about a quarter of mile where it basically disappears into the rough creek bottom. Its basically a bushwhack and scramble up Pete Creek to the base of the mountain where you ascend to a saddle at 11,400 feet. This climb still had some snow, so we did get a little snow climbing in. There were Bighorn sheep here, and for some reason a haunting aroma of Sulphur kept wafting in from somewhere. Stopped and ate at the high saddle, and made the steep climb up the ridge to the summit. This was an amazing day, with no clouds within 50 miles, ideal temps, and impeccable views. Rested on summit for and hour, then a tough hike out with some glissading. This is relatively short hike, but the hardpacked talus makes this a fairly arduous descent. We were all hurting a little bit by the time we made it back to the trailhead. Ate lunch at Burger Time in Mackay and drove all the way back to Kennewick. A 30 hour outing in total. Idaho 12'er number 5. |
