Ascent Trip ReportThis was a Boy Scout "conditioning" hike so we were going rain or shine. Hiked in from Los Alamos Road parking Friday night and camped at Azalea Creek Campground. Knee-deep ford of Santa Rosa creek made me a bit nervous as I knew rain was in the forecast. And rain it did -- started right about the time we made camp.
Started our hike up Saturday morning in light drizzle. There's a shortcut to the Summit Trail east out of the CG, then an easy and picturesque hike up the trail to the summit with only one area of moderate steepness. Much more pleasant than hiking up the road, which it meets in a couple places. By the time we reached the summit the drizzle had turned to wind and rain but we pressed forth. Since the peak was in white-out conditions we paused only long enough for a photo around the plaque, skipped our plans to continue down to Gunsight Rock and retreated into the forest for a snack.
Returned via the fire road so we could make better time and get out of the rain. Originally planned to camp another night but fears of fording a rising Santa Rosa creek caused us to break camp early and hoof it back to the cars just as the park ranger was making her final rounds before locking up the parking lot for the night. |
