Ascent Trip ReportInstead of turning off of Orange Grove Rd and driving to the parking lot at the end of Virginia Cates Road, I made the turn onto Eno Mountain Road and parked on its shoulder right before the road crosses over the Eno and then tees at Dimmocks Mill Rd. At the red painted trail head sign I commenced to hiking the connector trail which somewhat level-ly meets up with the Occonechee Mt Loop Trail in a few quick minutes.
Rather than hop on the loop trail I proceeded across it and hiked along a user trail that heads toward the quarry cliffs. Trail was snow and ice covered but I was able to follow it. Trail splits a couple of times with the left forks heading directly up towards the cliffs. I chose the straight-ahead trail which after passing the two forks turned right and required a bit of a scramble up a rock wall and then the steady ascent up the right side/edge of the quarry.
Upon reaching the overlook I moved on to the maintenance road and the easy ascent to the summit and then back down the road and on to Brown Elfin Knob, the hike over to the powerline and the loop trail, and finally back to the car via the connector. |
