Ascent Trip ReportHiked this with Christine Mitchell and Jim Mitchell, with a guide from Rio Natural, via what is apparently the only "tourist" route to the top. Started at the beach near the bottom cable car station, and followed the popular tourist path along the south side of the Sugarloaf peninsula. When this ended at some kind of big concrete cylinder, we continued on use trail with frequent short slabs, which were damp and slippery at first, doing an ascending traverse until we were pretty much east of the summit. Then steeply up use trail and slabs (now dry) to the crux, a 40'(?) 3rd class pitch that steepens into a couple of moves near the top that are probably low 5th - we were glad to have a top rope for these. Then more use trail and slabs to the top, where we joined the tourist horde for sunset. Rode the tram halfway down, then hiked down from the middle station in the dark. |
