The traditional elevation of Windom Peak is 14,082 feet, but this elevation is for the survey benchmark, which is located about 5 feet below the highest summit rocks. This makes Windom Peak slightly higher than nearby Eolus Peak and therefore the highest peak in the Needle Mountains and in La Plata county. Eolus also has a traditional benchmark elevation lower than the summit, but only by a foot.
Well-known peakbagger Ken Jones confirmed this information in USGS databases in 2009, and Gerry Roach's guidebook to the Colorado 14ers is now showing the new elevations. |
