On March 7, 1863 the McFree and Summers party were traveling from the Nevada mining town of Aroura to Visiala, California when they were attacked by Indians while crossing the Owens river. During the fray the attacked party had to cut their horses loose from the wagons. Five of the six were able to catch released horses, and flee the area. Charley Tyler, a black cowboy, attempted to catch a horse for the escape, but the horses eluded him. There is some question as to how Charley died, but there is little doubt that the Indians did him in. This basalt hill has since been called Charlies Butte. The site is also historic as the location of the first filling by the City of Los Angeles for water division rights in the Owens Valley on October 23, 1905. Information from: The Story of Inyo, by P.A. Chalfant, and the plaque located at 37.02471, 118.23057 on Highway 395.

Looking north from Charlie's Butte in late January, 2016. Two cows watched me very carefully as I approached this spot. Did I close the gate securely? Yes, yes. Sorry, cows. (2016-01-29). Photo by Aidan Butler.
