Description

OK so why Mount Dora? It is NOT the county highpoint of Lake County and it is not a mountain?

Two good reasons:

1) I am sick and tired of people saying to me when I tell them lots of people "highpoint" or peakbag Florida. They always smirk and give me the same line that makes them laugh with joy for their clever pun, "What is the state highpoint, Mount Dora? Ha ha ha??" So I figured, why not? Why not say yes, I have bagged Mt Dora

2) While researching the highpoint of Mount Dora, I realized, the town does sit up on the highest hill or bluff above Dora Lake and must have given early settlers some decent view. Finding the next nearest high neighbor was difficult as it is pretty much the "mountain" in the local area.

One would require a finer GPS to verify if the "true peak" down to a foot or so is in one of the other closed contours north of where I indicate the peak; but let's be real....and I tried to select something close to the lake so you could get the feel of the maximum gain from the lake and pound up that 120 feet of incline with pride!

But bottom line... next time some smartie pants says, "You bag Mt Dora?" I am going to proudly say "Yup!"

Next nearest higher neighbor appears to be those hills that are the reminant sand hills miles west past Lake Dora and west of Lake Harris with crests USGS shown as 184 and some above 185. Lake Harris is elevation 63. Lake Dora is connected to Harris and the canals and wetlands saddle down to the lake elevation so call the col elevation essentially equivalent to the lakes to the west.
