List Description

On April 23, 1985, I was in a boring college Sociology class lecture in the flatlands of Philadelphia. Daydreaming about being in the mountains, I started thinking about all the peaks I wanted to climb. At this point in my life, 99% of my mountain experience had been in the eastern USA, mainly hiking 4000-foot peaks in New Hampshire and driving to state high points in the Appalachians. But I was scheduled to spend the next summer in Europe, so my horizons were expanding and it seemed like a fun diversion to plot my future climbing career with an aspirational list of 100 worldwide peaks.

The list is full of misspellings, and in many cases I did not know the name of the highest peak in a range, nation, or island, so used a parenthetical place name as a placeholder. I can also see that I was pretty obsessed with 8000 meter peaks and other Central Asian giants at the time, so the list is over-represented with these. But considering I was unaware of the ideas of prominence and isolation, it does a fair job of grabbing significant peaks worldwide based on these metrics.

And, after using my limited knowledge to choose these 100 peaks, I scribbled a pledge in the margin: "Before I die, I will have been to the top of half of the mountains listed here".

I saved this paper (see below) and even though the passage of 30 years has changed my goals quite a bit, it remains a personal tick-list that has a certain historic concreteness to it. I fear that the 8000m peaks are out of reach to me at this point, sadly, but I have made some progress. When I made the list I had been to two peaks (Washington and Mitchell) and had hopes for five more the next summer (I got two). As of 2018 I have 27 (and 3 unsuccessful attempts), just over halfway to my goal of 50. And a quick check of the front runner's list shows that no one has more than 44. I guess I will have to get busy once I retire!
