Ascent Trip Report

On a whim on my drive home from Bridgeport, I thought I’d try to drive up Duckwall Mountain, one of the closest P1ks to my house that I hadn’t climbed. From the town of Tuolumne, Google Maps routed me over Buchanan Road / Forest Road 1N01 to the south of the peak. The bridge over Dyer Creek just off the main paved 1N04 is being rebuilt and is usually closed during the day, but unfortunately for me, it was open this Sunday. After about 40 minutes along this route on unsigned, deteriorating rocky roads, I figured that this couldn’t be the right way, and I returned to 1N04. The best way is as described in Fred Johnson’s trip report: another 13 miles uphill on 1N04 to the north of the peak, then turn right on 2N11, where there is now a small Forest Service signpost. At 3.1 miles, turn right. There has been a fire since Fred’s visit and the gates have been moved, making for a 2.9 mile round trip on the dirt road up to the summit. I found several reference marks under the tall lookout tower, but the benchmark has gone missing.

Duckwall is ideally situated to give a panoramic view of the central Sierras from Mokelumne down to the Yosemite area. I was able to pick out a good number of peaks that I now know, including Conness, Dana, and Lyell. The coast range is also faintly visible, enough to identify Pacheco Peak and the Quien Sabe range.
