Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful and calm weather made for a fantastic day hike up Cucamonga Peak. Used this peak for a training hike for Mt. Whitney in a couple weeks and it didn't disappoint. The initial ascent through icehouse canyon is very scenic, make sure to cool off in the spring on the way back from the trek. The trail itself was a mostly smooth system of long winding switchbacks that gently carve their way to the summit. The summit offered unobstructed views of the surrounding cities and even the desert in the distance. Stopped for a half hour in a shaded spot and devoured a light lunch which was enough to refresh us for a smooth descent. The second half of the hike flew by - we made good time down the mountain and were mostly unobstructed by other slower hikers. We did encounter an older woman who appeared to have broken her leg and was tended to by her group and EMS who had worked their way up to her location. The trip was capped off by a dip in the stream near the trail head which was a great way to reset before the car ride back to San Diego. In terms of nutrition, I consumed 2 liters of water along with ~15 oz. of a diluted sports drink throughout the entire hike. I took one energy gel at the saddle and had a turkey sandwich, half an apple, and a tuna kit at the summit.
