Ascent Trip ReportMy first trip snowshoeing, we parked at the Highland center and started at the Avalon Trail. The trail was pretty packed down, so the going was pretty easy. Some incredible views through the trees. The Mount Tom spur was beautiful, and pretty easy going as well. We came back down and headed over to Mt. Field after having a little trouble finding the trailhead for the Willey Range Trail. The way to Field was also relatively uneventful. The summit was beautiful, and we had a friendly Canadian Jay come and visit us. Here at Field Sarah and Brendon decided they wanted to return to the car, and we agreed that I would continue on to Mt. Willey and then go down the Willey Range Trail and Kedron Flume Trail and they would pick me up at the Willey House.
The trail on the other side of Willey was very steep and very difficult. There was about a foot and a half of powder, and just one person had been through there recently, so the trail wasn't very packed down. I ended up sledding on my rear for alot of the trail.
Towards the bottom at the Ethan Pond Trail and on the Kedron Flume Trail, the snow got really wet and heavy as the weather was getting alot warmer and the sun came out. This made the going pretty tough, and there were alot of felled trees that I had to climb over, very awkward with snowshoes on. I post-holed once even with snowshoes on, which was a bit tough to get out of. Got to the Willey house, and just as I took my bag off to call Sarah and Brendon, I saw them coming down 302, so the timing was perfect.
