Ascent Trip ReportOn a very warm weekend in June a group of us decided to try the Leuthold Couloir route on Mt. Hood. Our wives joined us for a weekend of camping at Timothy Lake. The weather was so warm that we were swimming in the lake even after dark. That evening we discussed the situation on the mountain and agreed that the hot weather made the desired route far too dangerous, so instead we repeated the standard south route. Sure enough a helicopter was seen working on the west side of the mountain, and we feared the worst. Upon returning home we learned that a group of climbers had been caught by an avalanche on our planned route. Several years later I met a woman who had been in that party. It had been her first attempted climb, and she was so spooked that she almost quit on the spot. Her friends encouraged her to go right back up to the mountain the following weekend and face her fears head on. She successfully summitted Hood using the standard route, and was still climbing when I met her.
