Ascent Trip Report

Asaka and i made a run at Lopez Peak from the south. We did not summit, but i wouldn’t call the trip a complete failure. We turned around due to time, not due to insurmountable brush, as the Burrito Creek Trail seemed to keep going from where we turned around. I do believe this is the best route to summit the peak, and we have now made it more attainable by clearing ALL the brush from the trailhead to 6 miles in. The first six miles was badly overgrown as of last Saturday afternoon, but no more. I expect about 1.5 miles of overgrown trail remaining from my turn around point and 0.5 miles of thick brush on the last push to the summit.

Here are some additional notes:
The route most likely cannot be done after rains as there are many creek crossings.
4WD is recommended to reach the trailhead.
There are bears in the area. Paw prints and scat documented.
Lots of poison oak on the ground. Long pants required.
16 miles estimated round trip.
I don’t expect the area to burn, as this section of the range gets a lot of moisture.

With that said, I want to get back out there ASAP. The area is very beautiful, but it has been forgotten by modern civilization. My proposal is to come back with a team equipped with machetes, axes and clippers. Not only could we summit, but we could also clear a path for future hikers. I would like to attempt this relatively soon, as heavy winter rains would make this route more difficult. Please reach out if interested.
