Ascent Trip Report

Attempted Cashmere as part of a backpacking trip in the Caroline Zone of the Enchantments. Left the Eight Mile TH at ~8:15 AM. Made it to Caroline Lake by ~11:30 AM. Our objective was to camp past little Caroline lake in the meadows. Note that access to water becomes a problem as you get close to Windy pass this time of the year. We however made sure our bottles were full at a small stream 0.5 miles past little Caroline lake and scouted for camp sites all the way to Windy pass. We found a nice flat spot in the Meadows near the pass with fantastic views of the surrounding peaks (see gpx below).

Woke up at 6 AM and left camp at 6:20 AM on the W ridge towards Cashmere. There is a clear climbers trail and cairns all the way till the saddle at 8000 ft. Note that there is some boulder hopping just before you hit the saddle. You can use the cairns to guide you here but keep following the path of least resistance towards the main summit block (which should be clearly visible now).

From the saddle, the climbers trail will head towards the north face after which it will disappear but keep traversing the north face till you hit a rocky spine and cannot traverse anymore (you will see obvious parts where a faint trail will be visible on/off). Now look up and you will see an obvious gulley and the true summit. Note that it might be tempting to scramble up early but other trip reports indicate some class 4 sections on the summit ridgeline however the gully I scrambled up was mostly class 2 with some class 3 moves. Made it to the summit by 7:45 AM (you will find 2 geological markers).

The scramble down and the hike out was hot and uneventful (got back to camp by 9:20 AM and back to the car by 2:00 PM).
