Ascent Trip Report

Arc Dome is in a remote area north of Tonopah, NV. There is not an easy way to get there. If you want to avoid dirt roads as much as possible drive up to Gabbs, NV, then take state road 844 past Berlin through Ione to the Indian reservation. Take a left turn then an immediate right turn on to Indian Road 2. There will be a sign for Columbine Campground on Forest Road 119. If you don't mind driving for hours on dirt roads there is a shorter way by taking the Gabbs Poleline Rd and then taking Forest Roads up to the same junction in the Indian reservation. You won't see many people on this route. Columbine Campground has maybe four campsites with picnic tables, fire pits and flat areas for tents. There is also a pit toilet. They have done a good job of developing this campground. There is no water except for a nearby stream so bring plenty of water or a filter. The trail that we took has been well maintained except for some signage along the way. It would be best to take a track or topo map along with you since there are many trails intersecting each other in this wilderness area. The trail has a couple of descent sections during the ascent which are a drag when you are coming down. The trail is well delineated except for a short section on top of a fairly flat plateau. At this point you can use cairns or a GPS track to navigate to where the trail starts again. Otherwise, a beautiful hike with great views of central Nevada mountains and wilderness area. We saw no snow on the ground at this late date and the wildflowers have long gone. We did see several raptors and plenty of cattle along the way.
