Ascent Trip Report

I've enclosed some pictures of Mt. Yale as a postcard. They were not taken by us. Chris left his camera in his pack that we stashed at 13,500 ft. We were not expecting to make the summit at that point so the camara was not an important issue. Chris was then able to make it to the saddle, 13,900 ft, without his pack, and then he felt better. The weather was touchy but hanging in and an experienced guy from Colorado encouraged us. We told him the altitude was getting us but he said that we looked OK. We collected ourselves at the saddle. Took in the the view and drank some water. We then decided to try to scramble a little on the rocks to see how it went and with a goal to just make it to an honest 14,000 ft. After climbing on the rocks for awhile we started to make unexpectedly good progress. Chris thought the false summit was the summit so when he saw that he got really encouraged and cheered me on to the false summit. It was then an easy transverse across the summit ridge to the real summit!

We embraced spontaneously, took in the view, and put our hands on the cairn at the peak "pile of rocks marking the top". Because of our concerns about safety, our altitude adaptation, and rapidly growing clouds we didn't spend more than 5 min. on top. I fell on the rock scramble down at about 14,000 ft. I was OK but it was a frightening moment. After that, Chris took my pack, which I should have given to him at the summit but I was trying to conserve our last reserves. These were Chris's strength for having left his pack below and my pack. We did get pictures after our summit as we climbed down. Chris's camera is film not CCD so it will be awhile before we have the pictures. It was scary but beyond awesome!

Enjoy the attached pictures! Yale is a cool Mountain.
