Ascent Trip Report

Dixon - Cowlitz Divide - Bald Rock day. Drove to FSR 5260. Be advised that mother nature is taking this road back in a hurry and without maintenance, this will not be drivable shortly. Also, the vegetation is overgrowing the road - expect to scratch the paint on the sides of your car. There are three washouts on the road that are still passable, but not likely after this winter. I was forced to park my 4Runner at about 3100 feet on 5260 as the water run-off is carving large ruts in the road risking getting the vehicle high-centered. From there, hiked up the road taking the first road right just short of the quarry. Followed this for a 100 feet and found the camp site referred to in other TR's. Trail is just on the opposite side. Trail is easy to follow and hard to follow at different times. If you follow the general expected path you tend to find it again. The brush is overgrowing the trail so you can't see your feet at times and there are a lot of gopher holes, so take care to not twist an ankle. Other TR's describe the route perfectly. No summit register at the cairn. Returned to my vehicle and drove to the Box Canyon parking lot on Stevens Canyon road. Hiked the Wonderland to the clearing after 5400 ft. and then exited east, cross country on the south side of the northeast ridge to the Cowlitz Divide - not really worth doing. Then returned back the route, but rather than intersecting the trail, contoured south and then east on the ridge to Bald Rock. Followed game trails and maybe boot path on ridge or just south to summit. Returned back to Wonderland and then to vehicle. No summit registers at either summit. What few views were obscured by the fire smoke. Unless you're intending to do the MRNP 100 - there are far better peaks to spend a day on.
