Ascent Trip Report

Chose the best weather of our week long Maine camping trip to tackle this epic hike. I planned ahead and booked a parking spot at Roaring Brook as our trailhead. We (Rohnan and I) spent the previous night close by the park and were lined up to enter at 0540. This allowed us to hit the trail at 0652. The hike up Pamola on the Helon trail started with a reasonable climb to a nice plateau. Then we hit the ridge to the summit which is a very steep boulder field that made for tough climbing. It took us 2h53 to reach the summit of Pamola. From Pamola we started across the knife edge trail to Baxter. The descent off Pamola and the climb up Chimney peak definitely blur the line between hiking and climbing. Views are incredible but you have to stop to appreciate them. This section is not for the faint of heart or anyone with a fear of heights.
