Ascent Trip Report

A vintage scramble on one of the highest and most adventurous peaks in Mr. Kane's guidebook. A 2-day trip, with an old buddy, with a base camp near Chephren Lake. The second day was our summit day, as well as a hike-out, making for a truly tiring 13 hr day!

The route is quite exposed at times, and like my more recent adventures in the North Cascades, it crossed the boundary from 'scrambling' to 'climbing' on a couple of occassions. It was my first such big peak, with a lot of route finding, some rockfall (got hit on my elbow) and stunning views. The entire area is full of tall, steep and marvellous mountains. Even if you don't fancy the climbing, just hike around the lake for some great scenery.

Scrambling in the upper portion of Mount Chephren, one of the best and toughest alpine scrambles in the Canadian Rockies. A rope would have come in handy on several occasions.(Climb taken in 1998) (1998-08-25). Photo by Jan Triska.
