Ascent Trip Report

The trail was snow free to Lake Serene. We started up towards Philadelphia Mountain from near the pit toilet just above the lake and the going was mostly open but up steeply over big logs and tree debris. We soon found ourselves in a field of giant boulders with intermittent snow, a bit tricky, but soon were in open forest. It was not long before the ground was entirely covered in deep, well-consolidated snow, and it was very easy and pleasant travel to the summit. The forest was open and we kicked steps up steep parts and tried to avoid open meadows, where the snow was mushier.

The summit was in open forest with peak-a-boo views to Glacier Peak, Sloan, Baring, and Three Fingers. We retraced our steps on the way down, avoiding the big boulders just above Lake Serene by staying a bit left while descending. The best views of the trip were the vista across Lake Serene to the towering east face of Index, especailly when a few hundred feet above the lake. We never put on our snowshoes all day, and did nothing I would call bushwhacking.

We saw no one above the lake, but the trail down to the car was utterly mobbed with hikers on this rare beautiful spring weekend day--not a place for those who don't like crowds. And we were stuck in a miserable traffic jam between Gold Bar and Sultan on the way home, not too fun. But overall a pleasant and productive outing that was close to home.
