Ascent Trip Report

2015/09/23
09/21 start at Billy Goat Corral to Eight Mile Pass > Drake Creek > Lost River Gorge (camp 1); Day 2 09/22 start in the Lost River Gorge/confluence with Drake Creek and go downstream, find a Y gully and take right fork to ridge through cliffs and scramble/hike over Middle Pinnacle and North Pinnacle, and stay on ridge crest on high ridge ramble to (skirting Lost summit because we already climbed it) to Pass Butte Pass and down climbed to Johnny Lakes and set up camp; Day 3 09/23 from Johnny Lakes climbed Johnny Peak/Trailblazer Peak and returned to Johnny Lakes, filled water bags with water (7 and 6 liters, each to carry over) and found a 4th class gully to ascent to ridge of Many Trails (went up first creek north of lower Johnny Lakes on west side of Johnny Creek and climbed really nice 3rd/4th class steep rock...with overnight packs and all that water! to Many Trails Ridge). Had to traverse ridge past a couple of gendarmes and teetering rock before attaining more 'walkable' terrain to Many Trails summit. Found beautiful camp on N Ridge of Many Trails Peak (no water...that is why we carried it!) at 7,200 feet. Day 4 09/24 made a steep, complex descent to Lost River via Many Trail's NE Ridge (the first ridge west of Johnny Creek). This descent is not recommended. Better to descend the broad, less steep NW ridge that descends towards Hidden Lakes. This would also be a feasible ascent route (note: all off trail travel). Hiked the Lost River Trail back to Billy Goat corral and drove to sister's house in Winthrop to spend the night.
