Ascent Trip Report

From UC Davis Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve.

Parked across Hwy 128 in the new parking lot. There's a culvert you are supposed to take under the highway but it had too much running water so we crossed the road and bypassed the fence. Then it was an easy 3.4 miles up the Homestead and Annie's Trails to the reserve boundary. After a brief section on the far side we dropped back down into the reserve to the headwaters of Cold Creek on a firebreak, then clambered up the far side. There was a bit of bushwhacking through overgrowth at first, but above that the fire break had recently been cleared again for the 2015 Wragg Fire. From the crest we turned right on another fire road up along the ridge to the summit.

Although it was a cloudy day and had even rained momentarily on the way up, we could see across the Central Valley above the haze to the shimmering white Sierras. To the south the hills and canyons continued all the way down Wild Horse Canyon to Vaca Mountain. There was a barn, an old orchard, and what looked like a hunting cabin directly beneath the peak, but no visible activity.

Returning we opted to continue straight down the ridge though a recent burn area to the creek, then up the far side to meet the Annie's Rock loop. Aside from some reedy bushwhacking near the stream it was a quicker return.
