Ascent Trip Report

If you don't like crowds, this is one summit you might want to avoid. The main parking lot for Kennesaw Mountain was completely full and the lower overflow lot was nearly full. From the lower parking lot my GPS showed .66 miles to the summit, but that was "air" miles. The actual distance is probably over 1.5 miles. There were crowds of people on the sidewalk and the trail to Kennesaw Mountain, but it was a Saturday and the weather was great for January, so a weekday probably does not get as many visitors. Since the area is a National Historic Battlefield, there are many information signs about the Civil War battle fought here. There is a nice visitor's center here as well at the beginning of the actual summit trail that had a sign indicating .9 miles to the summit. There is also a summit road, but it was closed when I was there, so the only ascent method was to hike. The trail is very good, however, and I reached the summit in just a little over 30 minutes from the more distant overflow parking lot. Just .1 mile before the actual summit, there is a parking area for the ascent road where there are excellent views to the east of the Atlanta skyline and the more distant Stone Mountain, although I was lucky to have clear weather. The summit benchmark is easy to find and there are rocks for a good victory photo. It took me 40 minutes to return to my car because I stopped by the visitor's center on the way back. It was a crowded area, but it was nice to see so many people exercising instead of sitting at home.
