Ascent Trip Report

Co-ordinates at summit (GPSr): N 41:36.324, E 1:48.692 The trail from the Monastery takes you straight there (concrete steps to the summit!) but at the time of our ascent, SumnmitPost´s co-ords pointed to the antenna summit about 300m away.

We arrived at 9 a.m. and were back at the car before midday. The rack railway and gondola don´t start until 10 a.m. There is roadside parking (take a ticket ad pay on exiting). Arrive early or expect a longer road walk.

The trailhead (N41:35.588, E1:50.257) is just above the monastery: up steps then R across a bridge. There are initially many steps as the trail ascends a gorge, uncomfortably warm at 09:30. Go straight on at Pla dels Ocells, eventually reach a T junction where you turn R. Carefully note this location as you need to turn sharp L here on the way back, signposted Pla dels Ocells and Monestir. On reaching a small chapel turn sharp L (signposted Mont St Jeroni). A concrete trail then steps lead to the highest point: fenced observation platform with viewfinder. Nearby is a collection of trigs: defunct pair of square and cylindrical pillars, current pair of same design; also a bolt/plaque in the rock.

The whole massif ("Montserrat", meaning serrated mountain) is bristling with granite domes and spires and there are hundreds of named rock climbs. The view from the summit is impressive.
