Ascent Trip Report

This was a private hike of a DPS peak and a Peakbagger peak. Joining me was George Christiansen, Pat Arredondo, Pat Vaughn and Bruce Craig. We took the 10 to Corn Pass Rd. (Exit 201), turned south, immediately got on Chuckwalla Valley Rd., drove 13 miles to Graham Pass Rd., turned right (south). Chuckwalla Valley Rd. was paved. We drove about 5.7 miles to a junction, went left and drove another 9.7 miles to a faint road on our right. The first half of Graham was in excellent condition. The second half through Graham Pass was a little rough as it went through several washes. You don’t need 4WD but a high clearance vehicle with a good engine is a must. Turning right (west) on faint road, we drove about 1 mile and parked. 2WD was fine for this portion of the road. You might be able to go further with 4WD, but it wasn’t worth it. On the summit we found a benchmark and a register.
For the hike, we headed northeast to a wash, hiked up the wash generally NE to a point where hiked up to a ridge just west of the peak. We summated then returned the same way. People have done the ridge on the west side of the wash but it didn’t look inviting to us. Typical of most DPS peaks, there was a lot of boulders and rocks in the wash. The last part was short, steep and loose.
After finishing Chuckwalla, we backtracked to the freeway, headed west to the Desert Center exit (Rt. 177), Exiting the freeway, we went under it and went straight on a dirt road about ¾ of a mile and parked at a point southeast of Alligator Peak. We hiked a short distance up heading to a saddle then turned right (east) and went about 1/10th of a mile to the summit. On the summit we found a benchmark, some wire, wood and a pipe but no register.
