Ascent Trip Report

After a day and a half of rain we were bored and set out south to see if the weather was better on the other side of the main alpine chain. On reaching the Sabathy Hut it wasn't but being Scottish and more or less immune to crap weather, we set off anyway. The path was not difficult to follow and the pissing rain, pine trees, heather and bog made it feel just like a summer day in the Highlands. We were the only car in the car park and saw no one all the way up until we came across a work party laying a new drain for the summit hut in the mud. The warden made a crappy cup of coffee and had no hot chocolate or cake of any kind, just a pot of evil smelling sausages for the workmen's lunch. We declined and cannot recommend the fare or the welcome. After warming up a little, we headed back down into the teeth of an icy wind which had us stopping for gloves and hats (and let me repeat we're Scottish and really don't get cold easily). It was good to reach the car and change into dry clothes for the long drive home, still in the pissing rain and hoping the wildly over-optimistic forecasts of Dachstein Wetter would finally come true. It was a hell of a contrast to the 30C plus sweat-soaked ascent of Grimming 2 days before.
